In the latest issue of Carved in Blue – the newsletter of Tencel cellulosic fibre producer Lenzing – the industry-leading sustainable achievements of five key Monforts denim customers in Turkey are showcased.
The article, SDG 13 Steps: How Turkish Denim Mills are Embracing Climate Action, details how Bossa, Calik, DNM Denim, Kipas and Orta are reducing their carbon footprints and can be read in full here.
It explains how Bossa, for example, prioritises energy efficiency, using the ISO 5001 Energy Management System as a guide for its policies. In addition, 50% of the energy needs of the company come from its own plant, which has more than 18,000 solar panels on its roof and a co-generation system to reduce the reliance on outside energy.
Calik Denim’s, Transformation Lab meanwhile works to lead progress on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through industry collaborations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign programme, while DNM Denim has integrated its energy efficiency low-carbon strategies and its carbon footprint calculation work comprises verification in line with the EN ISO 14064-1:2012.
Kipas is on the way to becoming a climate positive producer by 2030, by investing in machines that run on natural gas and solar panels, which provide 12.3 million kWh of energy per year. The manufacturer is also targeting carbon emissions from its wastewater by using the carbon dioxide from its coal boiler to neutralise sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the wastewater. Between 2018 and 2020, the mill’s greenhouse gas emissions dropped from almost 215 million kg to 111 kg, even as production output grew from 57 to 72 million metres of fabric.
Orta started using 100% renewable energy at its spinning and weaving facilities in 2020 and today, 96% of its purchased electricity is generated from renewable energy sources. Further, Orta assesses every newly-developed fabric’s potential environmental impact via LCA and shares the data through QR codes on product hangtags.
